The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is no longer enough to curb the advance of climate change and keep the rise in global temperature within the limit set by the Paris Agreement, of no more than 2°C, ideally up to 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels.

— Globally, all predictive models indicate the need not only to cut emissions but also to remove CO2 from the atmosphere to achieve the treaty's goal — says Gustavo Assi, full professor of energy transition and energy at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (Poli-USP) and director of the Offshore Technology and Innovation Center of the institution.0 seconds of 15 secondsVolume 0%

The vision is supported by the International Energy Agency. According to a study by the organization, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) represent 15% of the effort needed to cut net emissions from the energy sector to zero by 2070. The other 85% comes from measures for electrification, increasing efficiency, adopting biofuels, using hydrogen, and reducing consumption.

— We need to think of multiple solutions to reduce global warming and consider the advancement of carbon capture and storage as a means of decarbonization, especially for sectors that cannot easily cut emissions — says Nathália Weber, director of CCS Brazil, an organization that promotes studies and activities related to carbon capture and storage (CCS).
